Neutral colors in the home will always hold a special place in my heart. There is something so clean, crisp, refreshing and serene about a totally neutral room. While it can be one of the most spectacular techniques when done correctly, it falls completely flat if it’s not done just right. When working with only one color family, especially neutrals, it is important to use texture and hue variations to make sure it doesn’t come off as one-dimensional. This can be done by using different patterns, textures, and accessories of all shapes and sizes! If you’re going for a very mod look and you’ve used all white to accomplish this look, make sure you incorporate different textures such as a glossy lacquered furniture piece or a furry white sheepskin rug.
Another thing to remember when working with neutrals is undertones. People often think neutrals are easy to match and coordinate, which is true only if you naturally have a good eye for color. Shades of white can have blue undertones, pink undertones, green undertones, or simply shades of brown. You must be able to identify these in order to make sure your neutrals coordinate properly and flow together to create the peaceful environment you’re looking to create. Make sure you are focusing on one particular undertone when designing an all neutral room. If your starting point is an ivory couch with a yellow undertone, make sure all of the decor you pick from then on follows suit and stays within the yellow undertone.
Don’t be intimidated by neutrals! Practice makes perfect and the more you pay attention to undertones, the more they will jump right out at you. Layer your different shades of color and texture and you will have created your neutral utopia in no time.
