I am not exaggerating when I say that I’ve known what I wanted my wedding to look like since I was 5 years old. One of my favorite topics has always been dream weddings – what would yours look like, where would it be, etc. I’ve literally been asking people these questions since I was 8 years old so I’ve gotten quite a few blank stares from people that have never even thought about their wedding and what it would look like! I totally get it – I am in the minority when it comes to how much I’ve thought about my wedding style. If you have never even considered what your wedding might look like and now you don’t know where to start in the planning process – this post is for you! I am going to show you how to narrow it down and where to find inspiration so that you can plan the wedding of your dreams.
Dream Big
When you’re first trying to find your wedding style, try not to get too bogged down with the details. Don’t consider your budget just yet! You can achieve any look on any budget so don’t let that affect your choice. Your style in clothing and interior design will probably be a good indicator of what you’re drawn to! Are you always wearing neutrals or do you need that pop of bright color? Do you find yourself opting for a more laid-back vibe or are you always dressed to the nines? Is your home very modern, crisp, and clean or do you die for the intricate details? What you’re attracted to in other aesthetics will give you a great idea of what you’ll probably love for your wedding day!
Find Inspiration
When I was a little girl, I used to flip through wedding magazines and tear out photos that spoke to me (no, I am not kidding) and keep them in a folder! But now there are so many ways to do this without tearing out a single page! If you’re planning a wedding now, it literally couldn’t be easier to find inspiration! There are so many sites that are totally dedicated to showing real weddings and styled shoots that you can take inspo from. My favorite place to start is Pinterest (duh)! There are 100,000’s of photos and articles to swoon over that you can base your entire wedding off of. Create a “Wedding” board and search for pictures you love! Remember, it doesn’t always have to be a photo of a wedding. If you’re drawn to a certain dress, shade of eye shadow, or piece of art – go with it! You can find inspiration in anything. Just keep pinning stuff you love and you’re bound to see a repeating pattern.
There are also sites that are more focused on weddings, such as Style Me Pretty, The Knot and Wedding Wire. I would recommend going on these once you already have a more solid idea of what your wedding style is. Trust me when I say these websites are addictive and you will find yourself getting totally lost in them. I love these sites in particular because they feature mostly real weddings so you’re able to get all the details on the location, venue, vendors, etc. so that you can recreate the look and tailor it to your taste! This is the perfect way to find vendors in your area that will help you execute your newfound style perfectly!
What Speaks to You?
It’s easy to say “I like this photo” or “This wedding looks pretty” but once you really get into it, you should be able to focus in and say what it is about the design that speaks to you! In other words, what is it about the photo that really stands out to you that you must incorporate into your big day? This sounds like a major task but it’s actually quite easy if you take a step back and look and what you’re drawn to over and over again. For example, if you’ve created a Wedding board on Pinterest, what do you see that you’ve pinned the most of? Are most of the photos outdoors? Do they have an ethereal vibe or are they more mod? This will all help you play into your next major task which will be choosing a venue and setting a date, which we will talk about at a later date!
Blaze a Trail
If you can’t quite find one wedding that you think is absolutely perfect for you, don’t be afraid to combine a few styles! If you’re going for a vintage style but don’t want it to be too reminiscent of your grandparents’ nuptials, you can add it more classic elements that will modernize the whole affair. Some people love a rustic look but don’t necessarily want a ton of unfinished wood at their wedding! Combining rustic with romantic might be the perfect solution for you! You don’t have to fully commit to a style and copy those details precisely. All that matters is that your wedding style is expressive of you and your spouse!
