Having blonde hair can be both a blessing and a curse. While there is nothing more beautiful than the dimension and brightness of blonde locks, they can be more high maintenance than any other color. The handful of natural blondes on this planet have some of these struggles as well but the real maintenance comes in when you’re an artificial blonde, like myself. I was born with ultra light hair but it has gotten darker over the years and I’ve had to add highlights to maintain the light shade I am after. No shame in my game! Blonde hair maintenance is different than other colored hair maintenance. In addition to my roots creeping out every 6-7 weeks, my hair often loses its brightness and richness over time. I know this is a problem that a lot of blondes have so today I am sharing with you the product that has helped me avoid brassiness and brighten my hair in between salon visits.
To cut out any brassy hues, I use Pravana The Perfect Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner. Some people prefer a more golden shade of blonde but for me, it looks best when the color remains neutral against my skin tone. Purple shampoo is really popular for blondes but I really love the fact that this company makes a conditioner as well. Since you’re supposed to leave the product in to work its magic for a few minutes (I will talk more about this later), it just feels better to leave a conditioner in rather than a shampoo. You might as well nourish your color-treated hair at the same time, right? The science behind using purple shampoo and conditioner on blonde hair is that the purple tones in the product will cancel out any orange or off-tone shades in the hair. This is based off the color wheel, which I discussed in my Secret to Covering Dark Circles post. The same principle applies here – you are basically color correcting any brassiness that comes up in the hair!
It’s been quite a few weeks since my last highlight appointment! My roots are a sight to be seen but to make the rest of my hair color look presentable in the meantime, I toned my hair using Pravana The Perfect Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner. I like to do it about 4-5 weeks after I get my highlights done because that’s when I notice that I need it. This will vary from person to person and depending on how light or ashy your hair color is. Be sure not to do this too often, though, because if you overdo it, your hair might appear dull. Everything in moderation! Also, don’t be alarmed by the purple that rinses out of your hair in the shower. When you rinse out the shampoo, it will look like a Barney murder scene but it will all be worth it.
Directions:
- Apply Pravana Pure Light Shampoo into wet hair, from roots to ends, and work into a lather. Let it sit for 3-5 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly and ring out hair to prepare for conditioner.
- Apply Pravana Pure Light Conditioner to hair, from roots to ends. Let it sit for about 2 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Style as normal!
Have you ever tried purple shampoo and conditioner before? Let me know in the comments!
