When the leaves begin to change and the air begins to crisp, people usually get the hint that it’s time to change up their wardrobe and transition into the upcoming season. For Fall, this usually means heavier fabric, warmer shades, and more closed-toed shoes. However, something that I think a lot of people forget to change up is their makeup routine! Keeping your makeup season appropriate is just as important as your wardrobe. Below, I have listed a few things I keep in mind when updating my Fall makeup routine!
A Change in Shades
First and foremost, you may be surprised how much your skin tone changes throughout the seasons. This may sound absurd to some of you with eternally rich skin tones (so jealous!), but for us girls on the fair side of the spectrum, my foundation shade can change up to 2-3 shades between Summer and Fall. As my tan fades and my skin returns to its nearly-porcelain shade, I have to remember to change my foundation shade as needed to avoid looking like I am wearing a tan mask!
Luminous to Matte
As someone with dry skin, I am never drawn to extremely matte foundations because they can be drying and cling to any dry patches that I already have. This is a personal preference and definitely changes depending on your skin type. I always appreciate when my foundation gives me just a touch of flow, regardless of the season. That being said, there are definitely things that I do during the warmer months that just don’t seem to work as well during the cool seasons. For example, during the Summer, my makeup routine practically revolves around highlighter. I basically want my face to look like it’s glowing from within and there is a constant source of light bouncing off my cheekbones. Am I the only one? In the Fall, it just seems less appropriate and I usually tone down the intense shimmer and go for more of a matte appearance. I keep my skin looking fresh and slightly dewy with a semi-luminous foundation and keep the shimmery highlighting to a minimum. To keep my face defined, I like to step up the contouring and matte highlighting during this season, using something like the Kat Von D Shade and Light Palette. This palette contains cool tone shades for sculpting, contouring, and bronzing up the face as well as matte highlighters that allow you to brighten and bring forward features such as your under eyes and cheekbones!
Deepen the Hues
Once it’s time for Fall, I find myself wanting every single deep shade of lipstick on the market. It is such an easy way to add a season-appropriate feel to any outfit. Typically when I want to wear a very deep or dark color, I like to used a liquid lipstick formula because they tend to last longer on the lips and retain their pigmentation throughout the day. My favorite brands of liquid lipsticks that have great shades for Fall are Kat Von D and Stila. Remember to change out your fire-engine red lipsticks for a more berry or cranberry shade! Making this small change in hue will instantly bring your makeup look into the proper season.
