I have been interested in engagement rings for as long as I can remember. It went beyond the fascination of something pretty and sparkly – I loved inspecting every little detail and thinking about what mine would be like. If you want to know more about my engagement ring, I did a full post here! Now that I own my dream ring, I want to help all of you get yours! I’ll be doing an entire series on all the things you need to know about engagement rings but this is a great start. These are engagement ring shopping tips that you need to know before even stepping foot into a jewelry store.
Try, Try, Try Again
The very first thing you need to do when engagement ring shopping is try rings on! This doesn’t have to be done on a day completely dedicated to engagement ring shopping. In fact, I advise against that because the last thing you want to impulse buy is your engagement ring that you’ll be wearing every day for the rest of your life. Don’t feel like you need to go shopping and pick one out from the store’s inventory that day – take your time! Any time you are in a jewelry store and see a ring you like, ask to try it on! The associates don’t mind because it could be a potential sale for them. Even if you’re not sure what you like, try on a bunch of different styles. This will help you narrow down diamond shape, ring style, etc. Just like clothing, different rings look good on different hands. For example, I love oval diamonds but they don’t look quite right on my hand. After trying on a ton of styles, I realized that elongated cushion cuts were my style.
Take Pictures
If I showed you my camera roll (or even worse, Andrew’s camera roll), you would die when you saw how many ring pictures are on there. Whenever you try rings on, make sure you take pictures! Make sure you ask the associate before doing so but usually they don’t mind. They’re used to it! If you’re not with your significant other, say you want to show them a picture! If you are, say you want to show your mom! Trust me, you will be so happy when it comes time to make a decision and you have a full portfolio of rings you liked and didn’t like. There are so many times that I liked a ring in the moment but when I looked at the photos later, I realized I wasn’t crazy about it.
Know your C’s
When it comes to diamond grading, there are 4 C’s you need to know – Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. Jewelers are likely going to be referring to these C’s when they tell you about the diamond so make sure you have a general understanding of the 4 C’s. Otherwise it will just sound like they’re throwing a bunch of meaningless letters and numbers your way. You will feel like a much more informed buyer, and much less likely to get scammed, if you know what they’re referring to. I am going to do an entire post on this at a later date so stay tuned!
